Family Development Services

Family Development Services serves as a neighborhood resource by offering adults and families the opportunity to enhance their employability, self-sufficiency and strengthen their family life, connecting individuals over the age of 16 and families through three (3) programs that serve over 1,500 adults each year. Services include emergency food, case management, counseling, referrals for GED/ESL and citizenship classes, and the only nationally accredited Senior Center in South Texas.

Our Adult Programs

Senior Center
In 2008, Good Sam’s Senior Center became the only center in Bexar County to be accredited by the National Institute for Senior Centers. The center annually serves 175 seniors living on San Antonio’s west side with programs including health and nutrition classes, dance therapy sessions, and arts and crafts activities. The Senior Center offers hot, nutritious lunches daily as part of its nutrition program and free health screenings are regularly available through a partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Throughout the year, the Senior Center also hosts various holiday and cultural celebrations. For many seniors living in the surrounding community, Good Sam fulfills a vital need, reducing social isolation and improving their quality of life.

Immediate Assistance
Good Sam's Immediate Assistance program meets the urgent and basic needs of at-risk families by providing an emergency food pantry, adult case management, support to prevent homelessness or the disconnection of utility services, and resource referrals for GED, ESL and citizenship classes. In addition, the program also strengthens families by providing diapers, formula and hygiene kits, when available. Good Sam also provides seasonal offerings to eligible program participants, such as the annual Christmas Bag distribution; the agency provides individuals and families with groceries to prepare a holiday feast.

Adult Case Management
The Adult Case Management program addresses the root causes of poverty and instability by leveraging social work services to develop the life skills and support essential to strengthen and stabilize the family. Services provide individuals with guidance and referrals to help them more effectively cope with complicated situations that decrease their quality of life. Services are provided by one full-time Case Manager and supported by Good Sam's Field Education Services (FES) program.
