Youth Development Services

The goal of Good Sam’s Youth Development Services (YDS) is to help young people ages 6 to 18 acquire the life and academic skills necessary for personal success. YDS exposes youth to new experiences, provides safe spaces to learn, and helps develop a sense of purpose. Built on youth development industry best practices and research, YDS assists youth by providing structured, age-appropriate services through five pillars that infuse each of our six (6) YDS programs offered across five (5) cities in South Texas:

  1. Support Educational Achievement
  2. Encourage Healthy Decisions
  3. Explore College and Career Pathways
  4. Develop Leaders
  5. Engage Families

Our YDS Programs

Afterschool Enrichment
Millions of youth across the country are alone and unsupervised between the hours of 3pm and 6pm. This time frame is the riskiest time that youth might engage in crime or become victims of crime. The Afterschool program provides enrichment during the school year Monday - Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Staff offer such services as homework assistance, educational group activities, team-building tasks, character development curricula, arts programs, STEAM education, and field trips. The Afterschool program is offered at the following campuses:
      Brownsville
      Rio Grande Valley
      San Antonio - West Side

Camp Good Sam
Youth lack access to learning opportunities during the summer and fall further behind their peers every day. Camp Good Sam is a six-week summer program designed to keep minds learning during the summer months to avoid the "summer slide." The Camp Good Sam program is offered at the following campuses:
      Brownsville
      Rio Grande Valley
      San Antonio - West Side
      San Antonio - North East
      Sonora
      Wimberley

Asset Building for Clients
Youth often suffer from an absence of positive role models. Youth engage in lessons by the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets to promote important life skills and personal assets. Examples of personal assets include: honesty, integrity, achievement, motivation, school engagement, responsibility, planning and decision-making, sense of purpose, etc. The Asset Building for Clients program is offered at the following campuses:

      San Antonio - West Side

Obtaining a postsecondary education increases the odds of breaking the cycle of poverty. College and Career Readiness provides individual guidance to help students successfully transition from high school into postsecondary education. Services offered include one-on-one advising, career exploration, college tours and application/financial aid guidance. The College and Career Readiness program is offered at the San Antonio - West Side Campus.
